"The RWAS Smallholder & Garden Festival"
to be held at The Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, Powys

in

COMPLEX 2 (C2)
(Situated at the rear of the Garden Festival Building)

over the weekend Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th May, 2008

We are very fortunate this year to be moving from the FUR & FEATHER PAVILLION to a new home in COMPLEX 2 (C2).

It is situated at the rear of the Garden Festival Building, and is very much bigger and much more suitable for our needs. It is one of the largest buildings on the Showground.

The Pig Show will follow the same format as last year with the Welsh pigs having their own Classes.

If there are sufficient entries for the other Breeds, we would be prepared to put on Breed Classes otherwise the Modern Breeds will follow the Welsh with the Traditional Breeds after them.

This will be followed by a Kune Kune Breed Show and a Pet Pig Show (mainly Kune Kune but any pigs may enter)

The extra space allows us to expand our activities and we will be offering Breed Societies the opportunity to attend and promote their own Breeds, as well as a few Trade Stands and various other exhibits.

Come and visit our Sows and Litters....

Each day we will be holding the JUNIOR PIG HANDLING COMPETITION

and the revamped PIG AGILITY

always very popular with the Public

If pig handling is new to you, have a go at negotiating a young pig around an agility course. Pig, white coat, board and stick supplied. A wonderful photo opportunity for parents, don't let anyone tell you it's easy, especially with prick-eared pigs who can see where they are going and lop-eared pigs who can't.

One of the main themes we will feature this year is

'PIGS IN WOODS'

Pigs are being used much more to clear woodland of undergrowth, such as brambles etc and properly managed they are proving to be very efficient.

With the help of the Forestry Commission, who have agreed to supply us with some six to eight feet tall deciduous trees in pots, a supply of conifer tree tops and a load or two of bark chips, we will endeavour to create a wood complete with an ark, the pigs will be retained behind a single strand electric fence which hopefully will be an attraction for the general public as well as a talking point for anyone new to pigs and thinking of using them to clear land.

******

Due to the mountain of paper work that pig keepers are now required to complete, it is hoped that we can man a Stand with all the relevant documentation and tests you may require re: transportation, abattoirs, farm health plans etc. as well as our usual Information Stand.

Other attractions will include the Association's magnificent Pig Breeds Display, a Pig Information/Help Stand to try and assist with any problems, or answer any questions you may have (manned by experienced breeders) and the ever popular piggy miscellanea Stand for enthusiasts to browse and buy.

Another attraction we are pleased to have this year is a display of MANGALITZA Pigs (the curly coated pig). There are THREE BLOODLINES:-

BLONDE, SWALLOW BELLIED and RED

So do search out our new home in C2 (Complex 2), whenever you come along you will receive a warm welcome, answers to your questions and fun for the whole family. The Association personnel are looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones.

There is always plenty to do, so if you can help in any way to make this venture a big success it would be very much appreciated. There's a lot of work setting up, helping with the Displays in or out of the Ring, crowd control at times, the information and merchandise stands, making tea, paperwork etc. and loads more, and most importantly .... everyone needs a break now and then!

This is the Association's main event of the year
and to make it the success it should be,
the one or two regulars
do need some help and
really would be pleased to have you join them.

And it's fun
